Wine Cellar Inspirations: When Is It Too Cold For Your Wine?

November 24th, 2021
Is there such a thing as “too cold” temperature for wine? Can you keep your wine bottles in the fridge? These are some of the more frequently asked questions when it comes to wine storage. If you’re the type to immediately consume a bottle once it’s popped open, this won’t be much of an issue. But if you open too many at one time, then you’ll need to know how to preserve them.
 Too cold for your wine?
What is a “too cold” temperature for wine?

The Golden Rule when it comes to wine bottles is to keep them under the ideal storage conditions 24/7. Sudden fluctuations in temperature can be detrimental to the aging of your wine. However, studies show that cool temperatures are not nearly as dangerous to wine as heat. If you live in cooler climates, you might just be a tad luckier. But what temperature is considered as “too cold” for wine? As long as the wine is gradually cooled and does not experience a sharp drop in temperature, the cold will not affect the aging process.

However, keep in mind that when exposed colder temperatures, the wine will expand. This will put pressure on both the cork and the bottle. Also, the wine will crystalize and freeze between 15-20◦F. This may cause the bottle to crack or the cork to pop, both of which will cause oxidization. That’s why a sharp drop in temperature should be avoided. For example, if you have an opened wine bottle at the dinner table, don’t shove it in the freezer after. That is a surefire way to “kill” your wine.

Keep your wines from getting too cold!

How do you combat “too cold” temperatures?

Now how do you prevent your wine bottles from freezing? If you live in much colder climates, what is the proper storage solution? Storing your bottles in an insulated and sealed space that has temperature and humidity control is key. This is why a wine refrigerator is a necessity. Wine refrigerators are designed to ensure that ideal wine storage conditions are maintained 24/7. Another solution would be to invest in a wine cabinet. A refrigerated wine cabinet which you can also customize is a great option. WCI actually offers custom refrigerated wine cabinets with our WineZone catalog. Now what if you do not have a designated storage area? You will need to store your wines in an insulated room in the house. This is why basement wine cellars are highly recommended. A wine cellar cooling system needs to be installed in most cases. It’s imperative that the temperature does not drop below 45◦F, especially during winter. ^_^
