May 12th, 2011

Wine Cellar Innovations’ eco-friendly options for your wine cellar!

So we talked about Wine Cellar Innovations’ green flooring options for your wine room last time. In case you missed it, do check out the post and tell us what you think! Isn’t it amazing to know you’ve got several options in making your wine cellar environmentally-friendly?

And speaking of options, here’s more: eco-friendly wood choices!

When it comes to wine racks and wine cellars, choosing the kind of wood to use is perhaps the most important decision you will make. So let’s take a look at your “green” wood options, shall we?

Eco-friendly Wood Choices: Premium Redwood & Clear All-Heart Redwood

If you’ve seen our photo gallery, you know how gorgeous wood wine racks look. They’re absolutely breathtaking! Here at WCI, because we love our forests, we give you the best eco-friendly choice for wine racks – Redwood. We wrote about the mighty Redwood and saving trees a few months back; we suggest you take quick look at the amazing photo of the cross section of a Redwood in that blog post.

Premium Redwood

Why is our Premium Redwood an environmentally sound choice? Well, ALL our Redwood is produced under the guidelines of SFI, Sustainable Forestry Initiative. With this SFI Certification, you are assured that the Redwood you purchase from us have been harvested in an environmentally sound manner. Because we purchase and process a vast amount of Redwood, you enjoy great savings too!

Redwood has been a favorite material for wine cellars over the years because it is such an amazing wood. It is naturally resistant to the cool, humid atmosphere desired for long-term wine storage, and there’s no other wood that ages so beautifully as the Redwood. Premium Redwood is also less expensive than Clear All Heart Redwood. We love the wood’s various colors — white to pink to dark purple swirled and streaked together. It’s beautiful even without a finish and contains natural wood preservatives! Just have a look at this wine cellar that shows off the beauty of Premium Redwood in a dark walnut stain, and this one that shows Premium Redwood unstained. Durable and definitely a sight to behold, aren’t you glad that such beautiful wood species is a pro-Earth choice?

Clear All Heart Redwood

Before we proceed, don’t get confused – both Premium Redwood and All-Heart Redwood do not come from separate trees. These woods come from the same log; it’s just a question of which part of the tree they came from.

Clear All-Heart Redwood comes from the center of the Redwood tree, while Premium Redwood comes from the outside of the log. All Heart is characterized by a deep, rich beautiful reddish brown color and a remarkable grain. Just take a look at this recent installation of an All Heart Redwood wine cellar. Also noteworthy is its grain patterns, which are more pronounced in the dark stained samples than in the natural unfinished ones.

Like the Premium, even without a finish, All Heart has natural beauty. It also absorbs and retains all types of finishes tremendously well. Natural, unstained Clear All Heart Redwood takes on increasing darker depth of beautiful color as it ages too – just check out this unstained All Heart photo.

Needless to say, by choosing Redwoods, you’re making the right choice on what’s best for your beloved wines – and the environment.
