Earthquake-Proof Your Wine Racks

December 16th, 2010

Wine RacksAre your wine bottles safe from an earthquake or unexpected accidents? Whether you live in an earthquake prone area or not, you might want to invest in an earthquake resistant wine rack to protect your wine collection.

If you, or someone you know, has had experience having one or several of your wine bottles falling off your wine rack and smashing on the floor, then it’s pretty clear that you need a wine rack that can protect your wines.

It’s always better to be prepared, right? If, say, your wine rack is bolted to the floor but not the walls, then the wine rack will most likely tend to buckle and collapse!

While the wine racks for sale created at Wine Cellar Innovations would hold up to moderate to mild earthquakes, sometimes you just need a little something more, especially to protect your high value wines. Well, because we know how important your wine investment is to you, we did something to protect it. Wine Cellar Innovations offers “Earthquake Resistant” wine racks.  These wine racks are designed with a 6 1/2 degree angle sloped to the rear which is mounted against the wall. In the event of an earthquake, the wine bottles will naturally come to rest against the wall.

When you think about it, earthquake resistance is no more than making the front of the wine rack taller than the back.

Want To Fix Your Current Wine Racks?

If you already have wine racks at home that simply need a little adjusting, we would recommend slide some 1x2’s beneath the bottom front of your stacked wine racks and make sure the top and back is secured to the wall. To do this, the bottom of the rack would need to be pulled away from the wall slightly and each of the racks would need to be attached to each other. This method works far better with standard individual bottles since they provide each bottle the highest amount of friction. Bottles stacked atop each other, in bulk provide a fraction of that friction thus allowing them to slide out of the storage unit utilized.

A slightly more difficult method, but more secure, would be to add a plywood back on the racks and angle cut a few 1×2 pieces.  If you attach or screw those to the wall and secure the plywood to that backs to that slope, in addition to the 1×2 mentioned….above, that would ensure your wine racks never move.  It does not guarantee that your wine bottles will not fall out. The best way to guarantee that would be adding a door on the front of your rack. That would keep them from falling out of your wine racks.

Chains to Hold Your Wine

We also offer a novelty chain that is pinned into the rack and holds the neck of the bottle. With these precautions, your wines are safe and secure – we all know any damage to them or your wine racks can cost a lot of money and create a dangerous mess to clean up!

The “Big One”

There is always talk of having a 7.0 earthquake or higher at some point in the future. If it does happen, your wines might be the least of your problems. If you are concerned, be sure to take some thought on how your wine racks are held up if indeed the ‘big one’ comes.

    Hi Guys!

When I came up with the idea of the QuakeGuardian, the only thing that was on the market at the time was a earthquake resistant rack with the slide rails at 6 1/2 degrees.
I had to ask myself woulld that really protect the bottles during a mid to large earthquake. Well I found later when I had shake testing done. I put two racks side by side. the first rack had the QuakeGuardians with the coil cord installed the other rack has the slide rails at 6 1/2 degrees. Shake testing was performed by anco engineers.
