Holiday Wine Exchange Party Ideas

December 11th, 2010

Wine TastingWhat is the best way to share your love of wine with friends and family?

Well, I’m sure by this time they know you love wine and you are gifted with wine tasting certificates, decorated wine glasses, and wine bottles by the dozens. Have you thought about bringing your love of wine to your traditional family gatherings?

If your family is anything like mine, there is a clear line drawn between the adult table and the children table. Sometimes the kids table might be a little more rowdier and fun then the adults but if you get a wine party started, you might turn things around!

Wine Elephant Game

That dreaded “white elephant” game can be made into a fun wine party. Ask your friends and family to bring a bottle of wine valued around $25.00 and draw numbers to start the game. Remember, you can only do THREE steals and then it’s done. No cheating! You can make it fun by breaking open a few bottles for wine tasting after the game is done. Or you might want to start before. Just sayin’.

Here is a cheat sheet on the rules of White Elephant.

Wine Tastings

It’s a little effort on the host of the party but if they have enough wine glasses, go for it! Every group can bring a bottle to the party and you can do a wine tasting. If you are the host, you can make some wonderful guest gifts with special stationary that they can take home and a pen to write their notes with. Instead of tastings, you can also have a holiday wine exchange party by just switching up in a wine bottle exchange.

Holiday Gift Baskets

EtsyThis can be a traditional gift but a bottle of wine is never turned down as a gift to your friends or family over the holidays. Make it special by making (or buying! Etsy is my fav!) wine bags or even special favors like homemade soaps, wine coasters,

Etsy Hand Painted Wine GlassesI can get lost in Etsy, here are some of my favorite gifts having to do with wine.

Wine Games

Have you heard of Winerd from Uncommon Goods? Trivia with a wine twist! You can break it out after the kids have finished unwrapping their gifts! It looks like they are in short supply though, so act now.

Best Holiday Drink? I am biased against Christmas Wassail. What is your favorite?

A hot traditional holiday drink using apple cider and apple liqueur.

1 gallon apple cider
2 cinnamon sticks and another 8 to garnish
25-30 cloves
1 quart pineapple juice or cranberry juice cocktail
2 tablespoons sugar
1 cup apple liqueur

To make: In a large saucepan combine cranberry juice, cider, sugar cinnamon sticks, cloves and simmer uncovered for 10 minute and skim off the froth. Add the apple liqueur and simmer another two minutes. Strain out cloves and cinnamon sticks.Done!

To serve: Pour wassail into glasses and garnish with cinnamon sticks.

Enjoy your party!
