How to Build a Wine Cellar on a Budget

September 18th, 2010

Wine cellars have been thought to be a common fixture of the rich and privileged, the restaurateur or wine distributors and companies.

Well, not anymore.

Anyone who loves wines can certainly have his or her own room inside their houses solely for storing and keeping their prized wine collections.

To meet the demands of the growing number of wine lovers who want to have their own wine storerooms, manufacturers and designers made pre-designed wine storages that can be home-delivered complete with insulations and temperature controls as necessary requirements for every wine cellar. These are still generally costly but they are good investments especially for the wine lovers.

Wine enthusiasts living on a tight budget, especially these days that the economy is still on the rocks, have no reason to put their dreams of having their own wine cellars behind the closet.

If you are one of them, you can still have your own collection stored somewhere inside your own house. What is necessary is more of your imagination and a small portion of your bank account.

The general rule of thumb when it comes to storing wines is that the wines should be kept at temperatures between 55 – 70 degrees Fahrenheit and around 60 percent relative humidity.  These are typical ambient temperatures in colder areas so you will not need added insulation. Two more things to remember, the wines should be kept away from direct sunlight and vibrations.

With these things in mind, look for an unused room or closet inside the house. Perhaps, you have a storeroom that you can empty out. You don’t have to throw away everything in that room. Once you have cleared out the room, start fixing your wine racks. There are wine racking systems available with installation kits that you can easily follow. Since you don’t have a formal installation system, it is best to have your wine bottles kept horizontally to keep the corks moist in case the wine cellar humidity gets too low.

There you have it, when everything is done, you can store your cases of favorite wines and start collecting other rare and collectible items that you fancy in your very own self customized wine cellar.
