Price Comparison Between Woods

Creating the perfect wine cellar can be a fun and involved process. Listed in order of the least expensive to most expensive, use the guide below to determine the best wood that fits your budget.

Rustic Pine Unstained

Rustic Pine is the least expensive largely because of supply. Pine grows throughout North America and represents a huge quantity of the overall wood produced. Rustic Pine is a grade that includes knots which give a bigger yield and lower cost than a clear grade of wood.

Premium Redwood Unstained

prem-red-un-4up.jpgPremium Redwood is the next step up in price. Unlike Rustic Pine the Premium Redwood is clear, meaning it has no knots. It includes wood from all part of the log which varies from white to pink to red and reddish brown. Some prefer Premium Redwood for the variety of colors. Redwood grows exclusively in California from the northern tip to half way down the coast in a band averaging 30 miles wide along the Pacific Coast.

Clear All Heart Redwood Unstained

Clear All Heart Redwood is the most expensive part of the redwood tree. It comes exclusively from the center of the log and is consistently in the reddish hues. Of all North American woods it is the most resistant to moisture, mildew and rot. For those reasons it was used in subterranean wine cellars before mechanically climate controlled wine cellars were invented.

Prime Mahogany Unstained

Prime Mahogany is Dark Red Mahogany which is one of the most a prized subspecies of Mahogany due to its consistent red to reddish brown color and classic mahogany grain pattern. Don’t compare this to Mahoganies described as Indonesian or Malaysian Mahogany which are from a mixture of subspecies which vary greatly in color and grain pattern.

Select Hardwood

There are too many to list or show samples of in the Select Hardwood category. They would include African Sapele, Black Walnut, Red Oak, White Oak, White Maple, Cherry, Bloodwood and Knotty Alder to name a few. Pricing on these woods is done to order and are subject to market fluctuation. You can view many of these woods on our Interactive Swatch Viewer.
