Rooting For Innovation And Sustainability

May 16th, 2011

We take sustainability seriously.

We value the concept very much, especially if it goes hand in hand with innovation.  So when we read about Disney declaring its support for third-party forest certification and embracing all credible certification programs, including SFI (Sustainable Forestry Initiative), we couldn’t help but smile because one, we love Disney, and two, we too, are proud of the steps our company has taken to reduce our carbon footprint.

In Disney’s 2010 Corporate Citizenship Report, the company says:

Disney Corporate Citizenship Report

Nature conservation is a top Disney priority. To support our commitment to nature conservation, an initial focus of our product footprint strategy is reducing raw materials that have a direct impact on forests and ecosystems. We chose to begin with paper-based products and packaging. In the U.S. alone, our Disney Publishing business produces 50 million books and 30 million magazines annually. We also directly source and distribute ESPN Magazine and Hyperion books, as well as various paper products such as stationery and autograph books in our Disney Stores and theme parks.”

We applaud Disney for setting targets for sustainable paper use, and taking all necessary steps to protect the environment. You can read more about their green efforts in this article.

Wince Cellar Innovations’ SFI Certified Redwood

Here at Wine Cellar Innovations, caring about our carbon footprint means caring about our forests. Since building wine racks and wine cellars involves using a lot of wood, we’ve made sure that we help protect the forests that our wood comes from.

All of our Redwood (Premium Redwood and Clear All Heart Redwood) is produced under the guidelines of the Sustainable Forestry Initiative. SFI is one of the two national “Green” Forestry management organizations, and is a fully independent, charitable organization dedicated to promoting sustainable forest management. SFI Certification provides consumers with assurance and confidence that the Redwood products they purchase from WCI have been harvested in an environmentally sound manner. This certification standard is based on principles that promote sustainable forest management, including measures to protect water quality, biodiversity, wildlife habitat, species at risk, and Forests with Exceptional Conservation Value.

As you may already know, the magnificent Redwood has always been a favorite here in WCI. How about we let these Redwood wine cellar installations speak for themselves?

Such a durable, beautiful wood deserves praise and protection, and when you choose to build a wine cellar that uses Redwood, we want you to feel confident that you’re working with a company that values our forests, and that you’re working with a green building material.

Speaking of green building materials, incidentally, we also read about SFI applauding the USDA announcement promoting wood in green building. SFI and a diverse coalition of organizations had called on US Department of Agriculture (USDA) to adopt a more inclusive approach to green building, including recognizing multiple green building rating systems and encouraging the use of wood products from responsibly managed forests.

How’s that for great news?

We may be in the business of wine storage, but we do care about the environmental impact of our actions. While we continue to bring you innovative ideas and designs in wine storage, we will always uphold the values of sustainability in our company. That’s a promise.
