On Loving Redwood And Saving Trees

December 4th, 2010

You must already know how Wine Cellar Innovations loves the mighty Redwood tree.

We have some pretty good reasons for making it our predominant wood of choice in manufacturing wine racks and building wine cellars — no other North American wood has such resistance to rot, mildew and insects; it comes in beautiful brown, pink and reddish tones; it becomes more beautiful as it ages and whether stained or not, it’s simply a sight to behold.

If you took a look at the various colors of Clear All Heart Redwood and Premium Redwood, you would know what we mean.

More importantly, we use Premium Redwood because it is an environmentally sound choice. All our redwood is produced under the guidelines of SFI, Sustainable Forestry Initiative. SFI Certification provides consumers with assurance that the redwood products they purchase from Wine Cellar Innovations have been harvested in an environmentally sound manner.

We obviously love our forests!

Speaking of forests, we were looking to show a better image that would depict the differences between the heart and sap wood variations, and we stumbled across this great image in Craigleithhill.co.uk —  the image of the cross section of a Redwood:

Interestingly, we found out from Alan Ross Editor of Craigleithhill.co.uk, that the trees, from which the cross sections were made were planted by Sainsbury’s along the front of their store, in Edinburgh Scotland, but had to be removed when an extension to the store was made just recently.

The contractors informed him that they have managed to make a garden seat out of some of the trees and Allan says he “is looking forward to seeing it being put into place somewhere suitable so that the public can relax and enjoy the view of the last bit of the famous Craigleth Sandstone.” He adds, “my efforts to salvage some of the wood from the trees has been rewarded as they were destined for the skip.”

For showing tree love, kudos, Allan! And thank you for allowing us to use and share this photo, that shows off the beautiful color variations of the mighty Redwood.
